He served four years in the United States Air Force as a firefighter and then spent more than a decade with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he worked as a Patrol Officer, Detective, and Training Officer. During his time with the department, Marquis helped establish the Law Enforcement Intervention for Mental Health and Addiction (LIMA) program, a groundbreaking initiative connecting individuals to housing, mental health treatment, substance abuse counseling, and employment opportunities.
After retiring from law enforcement, Marquis earned his Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, and completed the Conflict Resolution Theory and Practice Certificate through the nationally ranked Dispute Resolution Institute. His Minnesota legal education laid the groundwork for his continued connection and commitment to the Twin Cities community and the state of Minnesota.
